Today's installment: The Grumman F4F-3S "Wildcatfish."

The Grumman F4F-3S Wildcatfish was conceived for forward Pacific bases before airstrips could be built, and was inspired by the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a Zero that was also converted to a floatplane. Twin floats were fitted to a Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat, and to restore stability small auxiliary fins and a ventral fin were added. The F4F-3S was first flown 28 February 1943. The weight and drag of the floats reduced the maximum speed to 241 mph (388 km/h). As the performance of the basic F4F-3 was already below that of the Zero, the F4F-3S was clearly of limited usefulness. In any case, the construction of the airfields at forward bases by the "Seabees" was surprisingly quick. Only one was converted. ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

Came here to claim that Wildcatfish would probably make a great band name.
